I used to use kava. It doesn't do much - it's very mild stuff (it legal, right?). Open the capsule and put it on your tongue. It should make it a little numb.
I've also purchased bulk ground kava - the same shit the islanders use for their tea. It's ok, but really doesn't do enough to make it worth while. Plus, there's reports that kava fucks with some people's livers so watch out.
Currently, I enjoy a good mega dose of valerian for occasional chill-outs.
I can tell you first hand about liver troubles from kava. I was using it a few times a week, but in large doses and it was chilling me out very nicely.
Then it started making me feel weird and slightly off. My doc is a holistic doc and he told me to lay off because my liver count was much higher.
However, in small doses, it's really effective for anxiety or stress, especially in combo with st.john's wort.
