Here's what I use:
http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/courier/
It's not free, but it's very powerful with lots of great features to help you protect yourself from viruses and crap. It's been around long enough to be pretty solid but not distributed so widely that virus writers target it.Comment

truth be told... anything is better than Outlook Express
But I prefer Eudora. Version 6 and up is great at learning just what is and what isn't spam.Comment

Spam filter works great for me, so far it's only given me a single false positive. You just need to be consistent in telling it what's spam and what's not.Originally posted by Battuss
I installed it and marked some spam messages as spam. Next thing it started marking all my incoming messages as spam. The spam filter thing is messed up./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

You can go wrong with ThunderbirdrssEVOLUTION : Produce a FULL website with ANY RSS feed(s) in seconds.
contentSOLUTION : Allowing you to automatically grab articles from article directories,
import as many text files as you want at once, grab ANY content from ANY RSS feed, and scrape search engines, instantly.Comment

Yeah, just like Netscape 7.2 which i currently use for almost several months now without any problem. Tried using Outlook for several years but they seem to fail when it comes to filtering Spams.Originally posted by JayJay

Eudora (paid version).
The problem I found with most MS apps is that they are too seamless in their 'active' interpretation of MIME types.
This has become the favourite playground of hackers and virus developers, because the spirit of MS technology seems to be to share all the powerful OS goodies with its apps through APIs.
This is a pretty sad situation. As a developer since late seventies, I have never seen a richer set of functions and app-accessible utilities through an OS, but the exploitation of this has made all these coveted capabilities dangerous to use 'actively'.

Trust me.
This little thingy works the best.
It's called Kaufman Email Warrior, and it works like a charm.
