Is smoking banned in pubs/clubs where you live?

    Pub smoking ban 'inevitable'
    March 23, 2004

CLOSE to 70 per cent of NSW club and pub managers are concerned about the effects of passive smoking on the health of staff and patrons, according to a new report.

The Attitudes To Going Smoke Free report, a study released today by the National Heart Foundation of Australia (NSW division), also found 72 per cent of managers say a total smoking ban is inevitable and 83 per cent agree legislation is the most appropriate way forward.

The Heart Foundation and NSW branches of the Australian Medical Association, the Asthma Foundation and the Cancer Council are calling on the state government to legislate to make pubs and clubs smoke free this year.

Heart Foundation executive director Tony Thirlwell said there was obviously concern about the health effects of passive smoking.

"Every day hospitality workers continue to put their health on the line," he said.

"When a majority of managers accept that a total smoking ban is on the way, why delay?"

Mr Thirlwell said bans on smoking were already being introduced by many countries.

"New York has had smoking bans for a year and Ireland goes smoke-free next week. If they can do it, why can't NSW?"

The study also found two-thirds of managers believe their business is less likely to suffer if all venues are subject to a smoking ban.

Most areas in Pubs and Clubs here have smoking restrictions and it is rapidly moving towards total bans if you can believe what the media and Government is saying.

not here it isn't.... as a nonsmoker i hate that it's not...but as someone who enjoys all the freedoms every part of the world has to offer I'd have to say it's a good thing it's not banned --- more freedom to the people..

In certain establishments you are allowed to smoke, others you are not here in FL. It has something to do with a the ratio of food to booze that the place sells. An example:

Chilis or Applebees, you can not smoke.

Mike's Watering Hole (Stand Alone Bar) you can smoke.

It's not banned here in New Zealand yet but there has been some talk that it might be... I wouldn't really mind if it was banned (as an ex smoker I hat the smell of smoke on my clothes), but it would make it a lot harder to spark up a joint in the club.

                                totally banned here.

                                pisses me off.
All the folks bitching about second hand smoke.
now they want to ban smoking even outdoors near the building too!

Well then I think they should ban cars too!

I think car exhaust will cause you more problems in the long run than a bit of second hand smoke.
                                More toxins in car exhaust.

                                Fuck whiney non-smokers

In Florida, it is only banned if more that 10% of revenues are derived from food.....so bars and nightclubs are still ok with it.

Personally I think that banning smoking in someones private business is communistic/facist.

People who think that a resturant is a public place are crazy. A resturant is someones PRIVATE BUSINESS. How is it that a legal product cannot be used in someone's private business? What is someone doesn't like smell of beef, or is alergic to a common spice....should they impose their own things on every business owner? If it is YOUR resturant, and cigarettes are a legal product (which they are), then who is anyone else to tell you that you can't have cigarettes on your own property, in your own business?

I hate the smell of cigarettes, BTW, but I can't see how this is not a gross restriction on the rights of business owners to make their own choices as to what they will and won't have on their own premises.

Yeah no smoking indoors at all here in California.

I like not smelling like smoke as I have never been a cigarette smoker.

I was actually living out of state when they passed the law here.

When I left, my favorite hollywood club had charged $10 admission and $7.50 for a fucking corona beer, poured out into a fucking plastic cup.

When I returned, the same club had dropped admission to $7 and drink prices seemed to go down about 20/25%. And its not like they were losing business either, damn overpriced wankers.

People just go outside to smoke. And in more divey places they let people smoke anyhow, although the bartender gets a huge fine if they are caught allowing customers to smoke.

And then there are the bathrooms...

But it is nice to go out and party at places and not have to sit in a cloud of stinky cigarette smoke.

The reason they banned smoking in rest/bars here was because they said peoples health was at risk, even though smoking bylaws required the area to be seperated and ventelated properly. Basicaly owners had to build a glass room where smokers can go. But it still was not good enough, and city council passed a law banning smoking no matter what. Supposedly it was suppose to bring out the non smokers. As restaurants and bars close down, where are the non smokers??? Funny thing they never came out...As a smoker I have to admit, I don;t mind coming home from a bar and not stinking. As a former restaurant owner the whole idea reeks of dictatorship. If sales were up and people were coming out more, then great by all means ban it. But peoples livelyhoods are being put at risk.
I have consideration for non smokers. I also know it's bad for me and im well aware of the risks.

Oh yeah, there is a venue on Highland in Hollywood.

A few years ago it was totally remodeled and was just awesome. They even had a little downstairs smoking room with sofas and ventilation.

Guess what? Some stupid drunk started a fire and it burned the place up.

It has since been fixed up and made into some other club but fuck lazy dirty smokers who can't respect something nice just for them.

I doubt there is a smoking lounge in there now.

They have banned smoking in restaurants, but not bars/clubs yet. They are working on doing that very soon.

I personally can't wait for the ban. To go to a bar, and leave without smelling like an ashtray.....can't wait!!!!

Hi, I am new here, I am Lucy.
Anyway, I came back from Chicago three months ago and I like the restaurants overthere. I mean, the non-smoking and smoking section. I think that this is a freedom, if you want to smoke- go ahead, if you don't ,go and sit to the non-smoking section. I think that it is wrong to cancelled smoking in the bars or restaurants, just do the sections or don't smoke during the lunch time. People should respect each other.

There's still a few bars in California where you can smoke inside.

I think banning it is a moot point. Eventually someone is going to come forth with a big lawsuit citing exposure to second hand smoke in the work place as cause for their cancer. Since employers have to protect their employees from health hazards, and c'mon we all know that smoke isn't good for you, they will start going smokeless to cover their asses from lawsuits.

So whether by law or out of liability concerns, I think most places will go smokeless. Personally, I don't care. If all the businesses are affected equally in an area, then it is just a fact of life, and people will still go out. The only time I have screamed about this is when they wanted to ban it in casinos in the area, but weren't including Indian casinos. That isn't fair....

it's not banned yet but it's been in the works for the last few years. U have to have a separate smoking area to allow smoking.

                                                          Most places are non smoking.

In El Paso yes, but if you venture across the border to Mexico (few blocks from here) it's not illegal to smoke in the clubs/pubs.
