Free Site(s) question...

I don't think the domain matters too much, one domain is fine, as for subdomains I don't think some of the bigger LL's even allow subdomains on free sites.

no... ie: domain.com/freesitename/index.htm is acceptable

a subdomain would be something.domain.com which a lot of link lists don't accept.

Subdomains are not allowed anywhere (mostly) so simply use folders as SmutGiant said. Domain really isn't all that important but I try to keep the domains niche related.

Yes a hub is a good idea. Use the 3rd link allowed (at most places) to link to your hub on the mian page and gallery 2 also.
