Did I get fucked?

Hi GFY,

Been a lurker for while. I have been trying to get a paysite built, but keep running into webmaster problems. I'm now going on my third webmaster to build me a paysite.

I hate to think all designers are scammers, but three weeks after payment I have yet to receive anything I can look at. Every week he says "I'll have something next week".

Before I sent payment I made myself clear of what I want. Paysite with the goodies, but want to have some input about the design and developemnt. The paysite is an amateur site and I have ideas what I want it to look like. I'm not trying to be picky, but I think I should have some say in what pics will be used in my design. so far he has not asked me what I think or answered any of my polite questions.

How do most of you guys work when it comes to building a site for a customer?

Any suggestions how to handle it. I could call him out on all the boards, he is well known and works for a large well known company. I don't want to drag anybody in the mud, I'm trying start in this biz on the right foot, but getting ripped off is getting me nowhere.

We doubt we will get anything at this point and if we did I doubt it will be even close to what I want. So again soon I will be looking for another webmaster.

I will keep plugging along until one day we have our site. Thanks for any advice in advance.

don't pay until you see the finished design, or no more than 50% at first

only use recommended designers

if he is slow and not delivering what he said and when; post who he is, nothing wrong with posting this

Sorry but I did not make full payment, I'm not that crazy.

He wanted full payment upfront I gave him half and half when I can actually join my site as a paying member.

What to do, I already think I'm being Fucked.

IMHO

Three weeks is too long for a designer in this business regardless of who they are, especially after they have been paid a deposit to secure their time and effort, into producing something of merit.

Time is money to all concerned and satisfying the client is of paramount importance as they lose potential sales, the longer it takes to implement.

Generally, a client will provide all content for the design and leave the designer to make the judgement call, on what are the best images for the splash and the subsequent tour pages to make it as appealing as possible.

Sometimes a client will ask for specific images to be used, the designer normally works with the clients wishes and designs around his requirements to make it as visually attractive as possible with the given images.

Personally I would leave it until the day he specified and then call him/her out on the boards if nothing has been delivered. This would give him/her the opportunity to make good on his/her word.

Bottom line ... he/she could have said "No" to the cash and the project, but didn't, so in my book that's a contract accepted.

Thx for the reply Newton.

His last message said something would be done this week, it has been 7 days tomorrow. He would not specify a date.

I can understand that you have to have some trust in your designers skills. If you did not, then nothing would get done. When it is your personal site, you want some say of how you will be presented. I told him up front that I want to have some input in the site when it comes to pics and design, of course he said no problem.

If I was a webmaster I would make sure I am designing what my customer wants. What if I don't like what he has presented, should I be obligated to pay or should he do it over for not asking in the first place?

I'll give him till Monday, hope he reads this post and it rings a bell to get his ass moving.

I'd tell him to give a sign of progress within a week, and if he doesnt then call him out ... even tell him you'll do it ahead of time ... itll make him think a little faster

I am currently working with a good solid team from florida, ofcourse there allways is some risk involved. But this team is doing an excellent job. After ordering something you will get a contract which will be signed by both sites. you can find them here : wwwebmaster

It definately feels like I'm getting fucked.

I have asked for a sign of progress from the first week. Then every few days after. I get the once a week response "I'll have something next week." And because the position he has over me, I did not want to sound like a pushy prick.

I really hate to drag somebody thru the mud. I want to build bridges in the biz, but then again have to stand up. If he 's going to fuck me he will pay one way or the other.

GFY seems like a good place to start slinging if I have to.

Looks like I am still getting fucked. The webmaster finally responded to my last e-mail, when I requested a refund for the third time. He said he has been working 6-7 hours a day on my site, but does not want to show it until he is done. He told me all webmasters work like that. He said, if I insist he would send me a file, well that was Sunday afternoon. I still don't have shit.

If he does not refund my money today, I will call him out on his own webmaster board and every other one I can find. Hate to do it, but I need the money back, so I pay a real webmaster that wants to work.

I'll resolve this and contact a couple of you guys. The show must go on.

You can bet, I will be posting the link of his board and all his info.

One more thing: Don't go for the cheapest designer. The cost of the delay is worth more than you bargained for.

Also, get to know the designers well, and see if they really know what they're really talking about and if they have well sorted procedures (i.e. scheduling and project management)

We worked with several designers before, but we recommend these guys: http://www.caribdesigns.net/ They are quite professional and very creative.
