Just never let terrorists win and fuel the fire.

How to prevent terrorism is another discussion though. Violence is not the best solution, but that discussion has to wait until I've gotten some sleep

Giving in to terrorists might be good short-term. But for the long-run it is not. By winning a victory in spain, maybe they go after the Athens olympics next time? Or the Euro 2004?

Again I believe you are making the mistake to take as a default your action will be interpreted from religious terrorists and will affect their judgement and actions. This goes for the other part as well. Spain became a target for actively supporting the operations, it doesn't necessarily mean pulling troops will prevent future attacks. BUT there's a difference. Terrorists don't use reasoning. Politicians and citizens use it.

I believe I've been misunderstood a bit. I said I don't blame them (meaning the spanish govt), I didn't support the opinion that pulling troops will eliminate risk. I'm talking from the perspective of the new govt and the demand of spanish citizens. That's all. I don't think anyone has a clear picture of what's going to follow.

Don't agree with that, we all talk about how we went it alone but what about the 40+countries that supported the war and went with us. I am against war but this was justified. Get rid of the tyrants so we can all live in peace.

And what 'support' did most of these countries give? Absolutely nothing but verbal backing to keep them off Bush's list of "EVIL DOERS".

40 out of 190. Not to mention that UN members where spied at and probably blackmailed. Most of those countries had little choice.

no offense but most of those 40 countries bar england and japan were pissants. You know you are supported when estonia and lithuania have your back. BTW I'm sure Palau (population 20,000) and the marshall islands (population 50,000) who don't even have armies really held up the baseline defense.

10 of those countries wouldn't even add up to the surrendering power of France lol.

Other semi decent ones were looking for money or trade deals for their support. How many billions did turkey have to be offered again to use their land? nice "willing partner"

90% of Spaniards were against the war in Iraq. That conservative prick got we deserved.

BTW Spaniards were not against the war in Afghanistan, Iraq has got nothing to do with terrorism, fact of the mather is that Saddam's presence made that there were no terrorist really active in Iraq, he also was their enemy.

I'd say it's more of a harbinger. Most Europeans - having a real historical basis for understanding what war on their soil means - never supported the Iraq war. Those leaders that chose to follow the US lead did so against heavy popular opposition, and the war isn't going according to plan. Not to mention the gravy is all going to no-bid contracts for US companies.

The long-term outcome of this could be to solidify and re-invigorate the European Union in ways never before possible. As elections come and go, the parties that supported the war - and are pro-US - will find themselves running out of friends. Perhaps even the hard-liners who envision the EU as a counterbalance to the US on the world stage get real power.

On this track, popular opinion in the EU can be tilted. From the Europeans I've known - and there are many - I don't think the natural reaction is a knee-jerk "let's kick their ass" response you'd see here in the States (reference quotes above). Given the popular lack of support over many of the US-led initiatives Europe has been involved in, I'd say it pushes things more into a US-EU competition.

That, with the economic indicators, weakness of the dollar, tends to me that W's legacy may be the weakening of the US as a true world power...sure we have a big army that can blow people up, but any essence of diplomacy or statesmanship that previous admins have had is long gone here, and in civilized circles, that's what counts. Let's hope he doesn't invade Spain next.

at least they didn't elect a man, who would have been homeless, if it wasn't for his daddies money, your president run 2 companies to the ground, now he's doing the same with your country.

What were his accomplishments in life to support his ability to be president of the US?

On Yahoo ( http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...d=518&ncid=716 ) it says they will pull troops out in July.

Either way, pretty sad that they didn't have the resolve.

Remember how 90% of the UN voted AGAINST going into Iraq? Well fuck that Bush said we're doing it anyways.

The Euro Union will take over, and I for one am glad. Europeans have been through thousands of years of war and know how to run things. The states just knows how to kill civillians.
99% of the time I hear a Canadian speak, I am stunned by how they can differ from 50% or more of the americans: peacefull, progressive, social, ...

maybe we should invite Canada to join the EU, as they are a good example of how Western Democraties should be + they like Belgian beer and know how to party (this I know from experience :-)

This all leads to that dumb headed ape asstwat Bush, who some how turned the whole world against America. He has NO diplomatic training, no brains and no clue about foreign relations and policy. Bush is a shame to America and its people. With his "war against terrorism" (which was created to achieve his and his administration's imperialistic goals) created more hatred, harm than good. I am sorry but "bring it on" does not sound like words that should come out of a President's mouth.

Yeah we were one of the only countries that helped out with troops.. with Afghanistan.. I think people were ok with it.. with Iraq much less because saddam had nothing to do with Osama etc. Our prime minister had already sent troops over there before the public had a chance to voice their opinion... it was pretty divided though.. probably 50/50. Not like other countries who were almost totally against it. Now it looks like the free trade deal we were supposed to get out of it is shit. We back the US then they screw us on sugar and beef, not to mention sleeper clauses against out pharmaceutical benefits scheme.

I think they'll be punished to a certain extent for the lying about WMD amongst other things, but this election will be fought on domestic issues, no matter how much the PM tries to focus the attention on arab boat people and terrorism.
It's probably a factor but not a major one.

a lot of it depended on whether it was through the UN. A majority supported a UN intervention.. only about 13% supported going in alone with the US. That changed a bit once the troops were over there as most people get behind it when people's kids are dying.

As far as Spain and getting back to the topic...

This is the worst thing Spain could have done.. They have to be freeking total morons.. That will only give the terrorist's hope that they can win. Look what happened when the US pulled out of Somalia after we lost a few troops... It sent a very clear measage to them that we would pull out if a few troops were killed, our troops are still paying for that mistake today.

This will put hope in AL-Quadia's eyes and probally cause more terror attacks in other countries that arn't 100% in the effort aginst terrorism.

They dealt him his first real defeat during WWII on Russian soil and then started kicking his ass back to Germany. When America saw that Russia was taking over all of Europe it had to act, hence the whole East/West Germany thing, and all of the European commie satellite nations that were setup after WWII.

In any case, certainly America is getting a bit of its just deserts here. We intervened our noses into others business, and even before that, we were only interested in financial gain. Well, when our financial gains were threatened we used military force, things got really out of hand in those nations and now you got widespread terrorism.

Think back in history, this is the first time that terrrorism is so wide spread, so blatant and being used so often. This is certainly the beginning and it requires some sort of drastic political change or rethinking, certainly war didnt provide the solution.

I cant stand here and believe that we should of done nothing. 3000 of our citizens were murdered by a bunch of radical Muslim fundamentalists, that are supported by governments in the Middle East. Here is the scenario, You punch me in the face, I just stand there, you punch me again in the face, I want to talk to see what is wrong, you punch me again, I say hey lets work this out.....when do you fight back. Fuck that, if you hit us, we hit back and hard. Pearl Harbor is a great point in fact. AHHHHHHHHHH. I wish and pray that the world is a peaceful place, but it is not and never will be. And on the 6-7 years they were planned, they were under a Liberal President, no matter who we have in office they hate us. They need to be eradicated from the face of this Earth!!!!!

Fact is that most terrorists come from Saudi-Arabia, which is the most important allie of the US in the region, why don't they attack them? Because the royalhouse there listens to the US and let them have bases on their soil.

Prescott Bush, Bush Senior?s father, extended credit to Adolph Hitler and supplied him with raw materials during Word War II. The U. S. seized his assets under the Trading with the Enemy Act, but grandfather Bush found other ways to replenish the family coffers."

Mahfouz (yes, that Mahfouz), Prince Bandar and Prince Sultan (Bandar?s father) were also heavily invested in the defense industry through their holdings in the Carlyle Group, where Bush Senior served on the board of directors. Founded in 1987 as a private investment group with strong connections to the Republican Party establishment, Carlyle increased its original investment of $130 million to $900 million when it went public in 2001."

It has raised $14 billion in the last five years or so, and its annual rate of return has been 36 percent. Its 550 investors consist of institutions and wealthy individuals from around the world including, until shortly after September 2001, members of the bin Laden family of Saudi Arabia. The family ? which has publicly disavowed links with Osama bin Laden ? had been an investor since 1995."
