Sadly with Google they've done the opposite in many cases. Although they've been successful in removing certain types of spam for the most part, they've also heavily penalised a lot of legitimate sites and allowed slightly more intelligent spam to flourish. Still, on balance I can't complain for my own results
It can be a pain in the ass when searching for other stuff though.
