Perhaps they should calculate the average life expectancy, the persons age, and than hand down a sentence that reflects the amount of life taken away from the dead individual, with a minimum of 8-12 years.

The maximum you can get here short of a life sentence is 20 years, and with good behaviour, you only have to serve 1/3rd of your sentence.
In my opinion, those who pose a real threat to society should never be released
