It was a new twist on old stories.
Machines become self aware and fight with man. How many times has that plot been done? Terminator was the most popular movie with that plot, but definitely not the first.
Then there's the "is reality really real?" plot. Plato's Cave is the oldest version of that story I know of.
I don't recall that the two have ever been put together though. It was done pretty really well and I'm glad they did it. I just wish they would have left it at the one movie though. That phone call ending was a great way to leave us hanging, yet give us just enough closure so that we don't go nuts.
