This is a serious question. It seems like every time I see some kind of special about surfing in Hawaii there are always a couple fights that happen, either between two surfers or between a native surfer and someone visiting from the mainland. I know in things Ive heard about the history of the people that they were warriors who needed to fight, so is this the reason its carried over so long? Anyone living there with an inside scoop?

No, that's not true. Hawaiins are, by nature, very laid back and peaceful. It's just that surfers can get very territorial from time to time.Comment

I have 3 friends that live there and the locals are often dicks to them. Not violent though. More of a get the fuck out of here look or stare.
A culture difference for sure. It's highly looked down upon for a local chick to date a non-local for example.
Surfers can be dicks in their own rights whether their locals or not, often claiming their surf territories...
Locals aren't white... It's not just a tourist thing that defines locals. Live there 10-20 years and get to know you community and then you almost are considered a local (but you'll never be treated as a 100% local unless you're hawaiian)...
Just what I've been told.. I dont live there.. Thought about going for a year or 2 though.

In my experience as a white person having previously lived in Hawaii for almost three years I would have to say your friends have given you pretty accurate info. There are very few white people living there that were born and raised. Most come for a taste of paradise and leave after a year because of the cost of living.
Hawaii is unique in many ways. It feels more like Asia than the US. It is also a great place to experience racism as a white person to remind you what the black and latino etc population experience in most mainland communities daily. Since it is such a multicultural community there is of course racism. A percentage( not all) of the Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Filipinos and Hawaiians etc hate each other just for their race, and they usually seem to unite in their racism against white people.
This was a challenge for me and one easily met by getting to know people and then it doesn't matter what race you are (mostly).
Don't let it put you off though, I made some great friends there and would quite happily move back there tomorrow.
