why is ICQ the "standard" for adult webmasters?

i've often wondered this. it was great back in the late 90's but now it's deprecated and crappy. the client is still in "beta" builds (as it has been for years) and icq lite is a piece of absolute shit.

sometimes notifications and messages don't show up until i click on the client a few times to "wake it up" ...

of course, it has critical mass, the people you're trying to communicate with, but things like AIM or even Y or MSN seem to function better and AIM is a lot more lightweight.

just a question i've always wondered. i tell people that the porn webmasters online all use ICQ and they look at me like

php/mysql guru. hosting, coding, all that jazz.

Give people a reason to switch. I've had my one ICQ number since 1997. Lots of webmasters have been in the biz for years and have no reason to switch.

Plus I like ICQ lite. According to my task mager right now it's using half the memory of messenger. Not to mention when my computer is bogged down messenger seems to take for ever just to open a damn message window. I'd take ICQ lite over messenger anyday.. though I use both 'cause I have some friends who only use messenger.

I'd say it's most likely because ICQ has a log of your converstaions-

And too many webmasters go back on their word. This is my way of keeping conversations logged , in some cases it's helped me sue people who are thieves-

I prefer Trillian - has as many handles for AIM / MSN / Y / ICQ that you have in there and also, does auto logging of chats into a cool .txt file for when needed.

Time stamping as well..and its skinnable.

Trillian is the way to go!

I use trillian aswell. I like the fact that there are no advertisements and the logging and timestamp features. Some of the plug-ins are nice too.

i understand the bandwagon and tenure arguments.

but it's like betamax, VCR, etc. eventually the shit just gets so old and crappy something else should replace it.

i'm not selling anything or suggesting anything. i just hate icq personally. even using trillian, where i don't have to deal with the shitty icq interface, the authorization shit can get messed up when you switch clients and you'll be stuck in partial authorization for life.

I had this one AIM beta a long time ago that logged messages (albeit in a format that made it very difficult to use anything BUT messenger to view the logs). I've long since moved to Trillian Pro, though. It has all the features I need, a good plugin system & it isn't a product of AOL, M$ or Yahoo!

That last point is just icing on the cake for me though.

Wtf is trillian? Basically as a business I have to ask: How many customers/partners use trillian/aim/etc. and how many use ICQ. That pretty much decides what messaging program you end up using, whether you like it or not.

yea.. ICQ is where it's at..
MSN is too fucking cushy and cute and cuddly and nice, and it just doesnt' feel the same.. I like the way ICQ handles, and does certain things.. I wouldnt' mind it if it was a little more cpu/memory efficient when you list gets over 300 - 500 people, but a small price to pay..
I have trillian open for IRC and MSN and Yahoo for the whole 3 people that use that, but ICQ is for everything else..

I have icq since late 96, about a month or two after it went live.
Used to use it allot earlier but now I hardly touch it.
ICQ has no privacy. Everything you say is recorded on AOL servers and can be reviewed. AOL employees has the ability to do a keyword search to find out about anything they want.
I still keep it around but hardly uses it.
I have Jabber installed on our own server and use it for everything I need with people that are close to me and are allowed on MY own network.

Trillian Pro 2.12 works fine with yahoo on my end....

I think they have some FAQs to fix it & whanot inside the members area if ya dig around a bit....

only people I converse with occasionally on YIM are a few Indian programmers...everyone else on my list is on ICQ/AIM or MSN....

ICQ is an all around better product, even though all 3 suck in some way. I don't use MSN or IM at all, and IM is a hole directly into your machine, pile of trash.

I use ICQ 2001b, stable, doesn't crash, no problems, with about 700 people on my list.

okie, sounds like I need to upgrade. I pretty much just use YIM for personal stuff but I hate having a ton of programs running. Plus you can be logged in under different names.

everyone uses it because it was the first good im service out there, before msn and all that crap. it has gotten worse though, its not as reliable as it used to be. Its got the right features and its not intrusive or anything, nice layout, easy to use. i dont see a reason not to use it
