HAVANA (AP) ? Cuba announced Monday that U.S. dollars will no longer be accepted at businesses and stores on the communist island starting next month in a move that will radically change the way cash transactions have been done there over the past decade.

that sucks for the cubans who live there, they love and depend on tourists paying them in US dollars. When I was there, US dollars were the only currency being accepted, they were so happy to even get $1.00 US, it makes a difference to them.

This really makes no difference to the general population. It's like going to Canada or Mexico or Curacao and the locals preferring the US dollar instead of their own currency.

Supply and demand drive economics, especially in third world countries like Cuba.

My cousins work in a hotel there... they take home like 300 us a day... when they go through the checkpoint they're asked if they have any money on them... if they think they do they strip search them and if any is found they're thrown in prison.

Your cousin works in Varadero I'm guessing if he is going through check points. The average Cuban is not getting searched for dollars. If you tip a waiter OUTSIDE of Varadero, they are going to keep it. That's how they survive. That's why doctors quit medicine and wait tables in Havana. They make more in dollar tips than if they do as a doctor there... About $12 per month.
