I'm sure that's true, but I like the idea of those freedoms being constitutionally guaranteed. It makes it much more difficult for any government to take them away. My countrymen may be fucked up individuals who re-elected a monkey in a suit, but we are generally absolutely rabid about keeping our freedoms no matter what (with only a few exceptions).

You're either forgetting or ignoring the fact that Kerry supported the war and wanted to expand it further. Kerry wanted an extra 40,000 troops enlisted, which could only have been accomplished with a draft. Honestly, I'm not sure which would have been a worse president, but at least by electing Kerry there would have been a change. I'm a fan of change, I think it ought to happen as often as possible. If nothing else, at least one branch of the government would not have been republican controlled.

Unfortunately, there are a few people being held without due process and I think that's a travesty of justice. However, this is a very small exception rather then a rule. What you're describing is such a small percentage of prisoners (a fraction of 1%), that it's unlikely to ever happen to any one American citizen. I would much prefer it if it didn't happen at all. None the less, what is happening there is unconstitional and should stop.

In a country where guns are illegal, only criminals will have guns. England has not seen a drop in violent crime since outlawing privately owned guns and neither has Australia, yet that was supposed to be the basis of outlawing guns.
