There are some clear examples on this board that money does not equal happiness.Originally posted by quiet
as wonderful as large amounts of cash might be, it's only one of many components that add up to happiness.
those who feel the simple equation money=happiness, haven't got a clue in my opinion, and likely have never been there. what do you think?
I can think of one guy who recently has been trumpeting how much money he has but he has to be the most miserable idiot I have seen in a long time.
He sees it too but he can't admit it because it would be an admission of failure.
And to admit failure would be to lose face.Left intentionally blank ... just like my brainComment

Man can be evil ... money is an inanimate objectOriginally posted by goBigtime
What evil does not have money as its root?
You can say that evil is a byproduct of the pursuit for money BUT that has MORE to do with the man pursuing ... the factors of WHY money is being pursued is the root NOT money itself.
how's that?

I'll admit that it probably is not the root of ALL evil 100% of the time. I'd say 99% of the time money can be blamed for evil things.

Interesting, I found it to be the opposite. Most people I know with money are very impatient and demanding. The more they have, the more they go in that direction and it tends to ruin relationships.Originally posted by quiet
i find it's usually the other way around.
I guess you need to expand on which level of happiness.
It does make most people happy in the respect of more freedom, fun stuff and choices. But beyond that, its questionable if it makes a big difference or like I said prior, makes your relationships even harder.

If so, then that doesn't really count.
I mean if they weren't sincere or they had ulterior motives based on the fact that you had crazy amounts of money...

I disagree. The lack of money might contribute to your unhappiness, but it's not the cause. I've been rich and happy, poor and happy, rich and unhappy, poor and unhappy. In fact some of the unhappiest people I know are pretty damned rich.Originally posted by Blondie23

Basically it comes down to your personality.
I kind of think of it like a normal distribution curve. If you're a depressive kind of person before the money, the money might shift you a bit closer towards the average, but your core personality isn't going to undergo a wholesale change.Comment

Yes that is true money is only a tool how you use it is up to you.Originally posted by J$tyle$
Money can add to happiness
Money can add to unhapiness
Money can solve problems
Money can cause problems
Money can be a tool to do great things
Money can be a tool to hurt people
Money can contribute to making better choices
Money can contribute to making horrible choices
Money is not the root of all evil
Money does not = hapiness
Money can make a very wise man do foolish things
Money can not make a fool a wise man
The most important things in life are FREE - money can not buy unconditional friendship and love
However, you can not discount the point that money = freedom.
If you know the true value of money, you will understand freedom, freedom is its greatest gift.
Alot of people arent happy when they have made tons of money because along the way they have been fucks to people and have made themselves into thinking they are a "somebody"
You want happiness, become a millionaire, be a smart open person, than smoke a joint.

Good thread Quiet
I see money as instrument and the problems that come with it is from the lack of controlling its use or having the wisdom to use it properly.
Proper use of money is highly debatable subject.

Better than the day you purchased or picked up the Porsche or took first step in your house on the slopes?
I'm sure those days meant and represented a lot to you as well.
They are different types of "best days" though I guess.... they should be relabeled as "best days for my income bracket"
Another thing... I'm sure a much higher concentration of your "worst days" happened around the periods of time that you were broke-as-shit too.Comment

When you have everything it can become easy to forget what it is like to struggle. Its like the law of diminishing returns, the more time you have tons of money the more you have no worries in your life the less you have to struggle.Originally posted by goBigtime

Thats why I stay in school (college), the preceived illusion of struggling (getting good grades) keeps you sharp.

the porsche is wonderful, so is the slopeside living. these are things that were goals for most of my life. regardless, university was easily the best period of my life. and of course, i love money - if i didn't i'd never be in this biz. in fact, money is the only reason i'm in adult internet. go figure

Sorry - I don't agree with you there.Originally posted by goBigtime
But could you imagine how much harder those relationships would be WITHOUT the money?
Six years ago my first wife and I had a house, great pension plans, positions of some importance in the town where we lived and a combined income of in excess of $80k and we each worked less than 40 hours a week
She was never happy - she never had enough - we often argued over money matters.
We subsequently divorced.
I'm married again - since November we have gone through some very rough times due to ill health - our income level dropped significantly - we own very little - we have no pension plans - we are nobodies and we each work at least 70 hours a week
We have never been happier.
Good lasting relationships are not about money.Left intentionally blank ... just like my brainComment
