    WTF is an Alexa ranking?

    I hear about it all the time but I seriously have no idea. What's it mean? How do I find out about it?

    Apparently it's supposed to mean you're "big time" or something? Guess I'm old fashioned for paying attention to actual traffic and sales...

    Someone educate me on a Saturday night!

          No... it doesn't mean anything big.
          It is the most useless statistic you ever need to know. It means nothing and having a GREAT alexa ranking can still mean you suck, or having a bad one does not mean you suck, you could be a huge company.

                                      Alexa's traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users over a rolling 3 month period. A site's ranking is based on a combined measure of reach and pageviews. Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single pageview. The site with the highest combination of users and pageviews is ranked #1.

                                                          First off, people need to understand that Alexa's numercial ranking system is DEPENDENT on the number of Alexa toolbars users that visit your website. This should be an underlying understanding each time you view a website to gauge its traffic levels. If you ignore this, then your impression of a website can be incorrect. This is a very common mistake that people make, and ultimately find out the error in their judgement. Get the facts before you make a decision based on Alexa. Let Alexa guide you to the correct information, and consider its rankings an estimation of traffic levels a website may recieve in any given time period.

                                                                                          Most of the people underestimate the importance of alexa but this is the only one indepenadant tool ranking sites in internet. How you can use alexa?
                                                                                          Look here:

                                                                                          boneme.com is 300k freshpuss.com is 10k (according the porngraph.com)

                                                                                          If you find a trader you can compare with your site (just change the domains in the above link).

                                                                                          If the site is not presented in alexa then it's under 15k daily.
                                                                                          if it's higher than 20 000 position then it's probably over 100k.

                                                                                          Now you can know if you can force this trader or not to start the trade at all.
                                                                                          The alexa result is not 100% reliable but you can trust it in 90% of the cases. You can check for your self.

                                                                                              Do _NOT_ underestimate Alexa!!!

                                                                                              Everyone keeps saying "its only people going to your site that have the alexa toolbar"... Well.. that might be true, but the amount of people using it is a _LOT_ higher than everyone here thinks. It is a good ranking info for US sites, for european sites you will notice a lot of up and down in the graphs simply because a lot more do NOT have the toolbar.

                                                                                              That said, some people might not even know that THEY have the toolbar... in case anyone here didn't know. The Google Toolbar uses the Alexa system!!

                                                                                                              They track traffic going to any website and make a top list . They got a toolbar . So every site you visit with their toolbar is tracked and they make a list overall.
