Super Bowl® XXXVIII High Definition Was Fed To CBS From Houston Using Video-over-IP Network Enabled By Path 1 and Vyvx!
While a lot of the post-Super Bowl® buzz was about Janet Jackson's bare breast, the real technology scoop is that anyone who had the opportunity to watch the High Definition TV version was watching the first-ever Super Bowl® being transmitted over an Internet Protocol network, instead of the traditional satellite feed.
We've been covering a company called Path 1 Network Technologies since a report about "centralcasting" back in November of 2001. This company's innovative products make it possible to send broadcast-quality video over standard Internet Protocol networks. In 2003, they provided equipment that is used by a Russian TV news network based in New York City, to send "real time" broadcast video back to Russia using the public Internet as the backhaul network, thus saving millions of dollars per year in charges for satellite TV services.
Today, Path 1 was permitted to announce that the main CBS Television High Definition feed of Super Bowl® XXXVIII was delivered from Houston to New York, to the on-air feed, using a Path 1 - enabled MPLS network operated by Vyvx, which is a division of WilTel.
This marks the first time ever that a High Definition Super Bowl® broadcast has been backhauled over an MPLS-enabled fiber-optic network, end-to-end, at 270 Mbps. Path 1's products and Vyvx's ability to deliver a real-time, compressed HDTV feed from a live sporting event at three times the speed of satellite marks a movement toward a more "real life" viewer experience as a result of higher picture resolution and the elimination of delays between cross-country destinations.
"The Super Bowl® provided Vyvx an ideal opportunity to showcase the reliability of HD VenueNet for highly viewed, live broadcast applications. Integrating Path 1's solution, combined with Vyvx's 15 years of expertise with live video transport solutions was critical to the success of this event," said Derek Smith, vice president of Vyvx.
