If I had to guess, I would say it was an ex-designer that just grabbed shit he wanted to use. But I know in companies as large as theres, problems like this do arise.
Just to clarify, I do not condone the stealing of content. I just, personally, do not think they did it on purpose.

What I am saying is that we had a designer that was using stolen images...we thought that we had solved this problem by letting him go and getting rid of the images he was using. Obviously, we still have/had some on our image server that the new guys were using. We did not knowingly go out of our way to use those images. It's not that hard of an explanation to understand.
I worked for a company a couple years ago where we had a designer that did something similar. We had a ton of licensed content online and told him to use it to build a few sites. We looked at what he built and approved it since it looked good. We didn't surf every image we had bought so we assumed he had used the content we supplied him with. A few weeks later we were contacted by someone who said their exclusive content was on our site. I contacted the designer and asked him why he had used someone elses content. He said he liked that content and used it with the intention of telling us to buy it, but he had forgotten to tell us and so it became a problem. We replaced the images (with a different designer) and paid some money to the wronged content owner and all were happy (except the original designer who we never hired again).
I have produced some content myself and a few years ago one of the top companies in the biz contacted me about sending traffic to their sites. I checked out one site that I wanted to send traffic to and featured on the front of the site was content that I had made myself. I had only sold 2 licenses for the content ever and neither were to this company. They looked into it and found the same problem: the designer had used content other than what he was given. They bought a full license for my content just for the few images on the tour and I was happy. They also raised my payout on the traffic I sent to that site so I was even more happier.

We don't sell any of our content, but we do give affiliates all the free pics they need, just as any other site. Those thumbnails are from our affiliate section, but our logo and site have been stripped, and they pics they link to are just obviously fake.
