After the seeing Passion of The Christ today I have been pondering America's love affair with Jesus Christ and I'm more than a little confused.
Jesus kept saying things like "Love your enemy" and "Turn the other cheek" and I couldn't help thinking to myself that if this bloke was a U.S. citizen right now he would be considered a left-wing, peace loving scumbag. I'm certain that George Bush would have labelled him a terrorist and anti-American.
Jesus was the original hippie. As I watched the movie today I kept imagining him standing on a street corner with a bandana on his head trying to sell socialist newspapers. Or demonstrating in an anti-war rally bearing a placard reading "All You Need Is Love".
So why does America love Jesus so much? He certainly doesn't embody any contemporary American values.
Any ideas?
