    IP addresses, WTF

I went to get a small block of 8 IP addresses from host and after making the request, this is the response I get.

What would be the reason for the extra 8 IP addresses? The reason we ask is that ARIN requires justification for all IP address provisioning.

WTF do they think I'm going to do w/ them, hand them out instead of candy for halloween ???

Is this a normal question ?

Of course theres getting to be a shortage... they ran out of Class A domains ages ago.. I think all of class B have gone and class C will be all gone soon too.

Hence the reason for IP version6

your IP will eventually look like this:

Try a different hosting company...8 IPs, or even 16, is no biggie for a dedicated box (I assume that's what you have/getting) - also it helps to order the extra IPs when first ordering the service...most hosts will rubberstamp the request and make it happen so as to close the sale.

Anyways, there are plenty of IPs still available...all this talk about running out of IPs is nonsense.

Much of the so-called shortage was due to inefficient distribution, which has been greatly improved in recent years.

With all that said, most places will ask what one needs the extra IPs for...just say for DNS, SSL, email server, multihoming, etc.

However, basic webhosting *can easily be done all on one IP*...if you're using separate IPs for domains, that's basically a waste - google, yahoo, etc will index name-based hosted pages just fine.
