OK.
Anyone who has been around for ANY length of time has been dicked at LEAST once, and for many, SEVERAL times.
I for one have been nailed MANY times
But experience is the teacher of the school of life and we all learn - the hard way.
What was your biggest dicking?
It can be either in monetary terms of in pure pain in the ass terms - BUT PLEASE, LET'S KEEP THIS GROWN UP AND KEEP NAMES AND PERSONAL SPECIFICS OUT OF THIS.
One of my pet peeves around the boards is unfounded and no-evidence personal attacks
Personally, my pivotal moment in being dicked did not cost me any where near as much as other memorable dickings in this biz, but it is the one that is always most clear in my mind....
Way, way back in the dreamtime when I started in this biz, I was a free site builder. That's where my start came.
I was working with what was then and what still is now a BIG player.
They offered freehosting and use of domain names in return for the only traffic being sent their way.
Fair enough and a cheap and easy way to get started back in the old days so I went for it.
I built my very first free site, worked my tail off, and built it from zero to 15k daily uniques in my first 4 weeks, got excited, so applied for a second site (gotta remember people I was a SUPERNEWB with almost no internet experience, and I still use Frontpage for my HTML!! He he.) Anyhoo, I digress.
This was granted, and over the next 2 months I had built a nice little business with these guys - 5 free sites with over 70k in daily uniques and a VERY nice little earner on a PPS program with these guys.
Then one day, no warning, no notice, no notification at all, BANG, they cancelled ALL my accounts and stole the sites back and redirected the traffic.
No matter what I did - email, ICQ, even telephone, they would NOT respond and therefore give me NO reason or explanation for why I was dicked. And before you say it - NO I didn't do anything dodgy (I was SUPERNOOB remember) and I had worked well with them up to that point - asking for advice and getting help and so on and so forth.
Fuckers.
These guys are still prominent, and I do daydream about meeting the prick who still owns this huge company at one of the shows, and introducing myself by way of breaking the little fucktards nose with a nice right cross.
It may seem a bit childish to take that attitude, but to me that action represents EVERYTHING I hate about this business.
I must say the lesson I learned from there is to ALWAYS treat my affiliates and traffic partners as true partners in my business, and help and support and have forgiveness to them along the way. Ask anyone who works with me - that is my golden rule.
I should say that I ALWAYS am on the lookout for him and ask about for him everywhere I go, but so far no luck.
So if you happen to be at a webmasters convention or Internexxt someday and you see a guy on the floor with blood pouring from his newly broken nose, you'll know he has at last met me.
