It isn't the baby boomers, per se.. it is the religious right, the zealots who feel that they know better when it comes to what you (an adult) should watch, what you should listen to and what you should read.Originally posted by tonkagunner
This aging baby-boomer population may make censorship worse and make it hard to fight legally.
It is the religious right influencing government, to impose regulations that constrict the (albeit ungauranteed) right to privacy.
Censorship is an ugly thing and I see no mention if it in the original draft of the Constitution. Granted, access to information was not nearly as developed then, however the concepts still apply. Govt. has no place telling people how to conduct their daily lives, it is counter productive and will bring about some very serious problems if religious extremists continue on their bent to rid the world of everything they feel is inappropriate.Xanadu024 (aim) or 286785389 (icq)

The question of whether his schtick is old or not is irrelevant.Originally posted by Veterans Day

The question is whether or not his type of humor (whether you find it funny, informative, entertaining, offensive or not) should be allowed on the airwaves. If you can't see the importance of that issue, regardless of your opinions of the broadcaster or his broadcast, then you either have to do some hard thinking about the career path you've chosen, or perhaps move to Cuba. There you can be told exactly what you should listen to, read, see on TV and do from day to day.Xanadu024 (aim) or 286785389 (icq)

All the years in law school and they told us some shit like this would happen. Stern is the first. Watch what happens this summer just before the elections.
If I know my Sterns, there'll be no stopping him now. Since the public won't stand up for their rights the web will be next.Comment

Well, it seems that as people get older, they get more religious too. Just look at the TV pics of the people going to see Mel Gibson's Passion movie. They are almost all white haired people.Originally posted by booker

People get religious when they get scared. Remember 911? Next day the churches were packed to the brim. Two weeks later stats crash.Originally posted by tonkagunner

2004 and people still get uptight about people like Stern?

They already have (or rather had) that. It's called a big dish. The conglomerates who bought up all the media forced millions to little cable-in-the-sky dishes, but anyone can buy uplink time for whatever programming they want that can be received by anyone in the country.Originally posted by tonkagunner
WHat would happen if a group of investors got together an put satellite in space and broadcast TV and radio broadcasts?

They have lots, but this article says CC was only airing Stern on 6 whole radio outlets. No big deal except for the news value.Originally posted by mardigras
Are you daft? Clear Channel owns all of the stations in way too many cities!

I presume that if a new company besides Directtv and Dishnetwork, and they are formed in another country, they could broadcast to US customers and ignore the US FCC in the event that FCC decides to regulate satellite.Originally posted by mardigras

CC fired a DJ (Bubba the Love Sponge) here in Tampa just this week after being fined something like $750,000. Because of the size of the fine, CC has clamped down on anything they think might piss off the FCC - they're involved in hearings (as someone mentioned earlier in this thread).

There are dozens of satellites over the continental US http://lyngsat.com/america.shtml owned by many companies.Originally posted by tonkagunner
I presume that if a new company besides Directtv and Dishnetwork, and they are formed in another country, they could broadcast to US customers and ignore the US FCC in the event that FCC decides to regulate satellite.
(FYI, I can receive the satellites between 92.0 and 137.0 on that chart in the central time zone). Dish Network and DirectTV have their own satellites, most broadcasters in the world lease satellite space with other broadcasters and the standard satellite with 24 transponder (translate 24 channels) in the old world is now carrying hundreds of channels with the new digital compressions.
You can pick up any satellite signal beamed in the US with a big dish. Whether someone will unlock that signal (if scrambled) for you is another story. For years the consumer was told the big dish is dead, while the truth is your cable company (and little dish co) gets it's signals it sends to you from a big dish. They have dwindled the number of big dish subscribers drastically by striking exclusive programming deals (mostly sports) with the little dish companies and not making those available to big dish viewers.
However, those who have remained with the big dish and updated their systems can receive more signals than ever before. I have hundreds of channels locked into mine, There are many grassroots channels both video and radio up there for free, just put up a dish.
If anyone (including the public) was truly interested in nationwide public access, it's there.
As far as the FCC, most of the continental US is in the footprint of Canadian and Mexican satellites not under their jourisdiction. With signals going digital there is plenty of room and yes there is room in the arc to place a few more satellites.Last edited by mardigras; 02-25-2004, 09:34 PM..Comment

UNTITLED HOWARD STERN/ROBERT SCHIMMEL PROJECT (WB) - Robert Schimmel and Howard Stern's comedy pilot at the Frog has been given the go ahead to produce a pilot. The project, which comes from Michigan J. Productions, is based on Schimmel's own experience as a cancer survivor who marries a friend of his 25-year-old daughter.

I happen to know that the WB is paying him more money from this one TV pilot than Clear Channel will pay him in a year. If it gets picked up he will be too busy anyways. Do you think he really gives a fuck? Doubt itComment

On Monday Stern was pretty pissed about the new rules and then on tuesday he was talking about going out in a blaze of glory and trying to get fired. He said in a couple of weeks he was going to be having a meeting with the head of infinity and he would be offering his resignation but that he would rather get fired first because they still had to pay him, robin and fred. He said they could get fired, get paid and he could go to sattelite radio. So I'm not surprised he got dropped from a few but the article I read said he will probably be back on in that market with different stations soon.Comment
