When we were new in the biz, we were members of condom and back then money was really tight. This guy named Christian Malone contracted us to do 20 banners.. it was a big job for us, one of our first..

stupidly we did the work before getting paid and counted on the money to pay bills..

we never got paid for this job.. and instead of bringing it to the boards, we asked our friend Meatman for advice on what to do.. he tried to find this guy... he knew who he was because of other people that'd been taken by him. He found out he moved to Austrailia and even tried to find him there.. well he wasn't successful.. pretty slippery guy that one.. so Meatman contracted us to do a bunch of ads for him that we knew darn well he didn't even need.. paid us $300 for them and never used them..

Meat saved our hides on this one and we are grateful forever to him for that, not many people in this biz would help out someone the way he did with us..

Now, to your question.. getting ripped off online is almost impossible to do anything about unless you're willing to go to a lot of trouble and expense. I think the only real way to get to someone in this undustry is through their good name and businesses if possible.

Is this a hypothetical question or did someone do this to you?

You can trash someone's good name but there'll always be a few suckers that you'll hear about everyso often that will fall for a scam. It's a shame...

One way I've been able to thwart getting ripped off is to do "referral work" only. Knowing a good bit of people in the industry, it's not that hard to do and it's easier to find someone in case you do get ripped off. For someone starting off and looking for work it may not be that easy and they need to take any work they can get. All I can say is do your reasearch before starting any new venture. Hell, even a GFY search may find some interesting tidbits about a potential client.
