The Russian students all called that shelf a "schtraff" - which I believe is German for "shelf".

                                                                                                    Nasty things, very hard to get a clean flush going. And utterly gross when you have the stomach flu. If you think water splash-back is gross, wait until you sit on a shelf-toilet with a bad case of the squirts.

However, it happens that Russian has a bunch of words borrowed from German, so I believed it when I was told it. Apparently back in the Czarist era they were part of that "all the royalty in Europe was interbreeding" thing and there was a lot of german spoken in the Kremlin and in Moscow society. That had the usual linguistic influence, just like all the French words in English that date from the period of the Norman conquest.

                                                                                                                                                                                    I have to do with lots of models from countries like Poland, Czech and even Russia and these languages havn't nearly anything to do with languages like english, french or even german. But there is a northern german accent called "Platteutsch" which is quite similar to english.
