US laws can be so screwed up....... We still have laws from the 1800's that are still on the books. They stay on the books because it costs too much to change them.
Many years ago I was in the Marines in NC. One Marine got jailed for beating his wife on a Sunday afternoon. He went tr trial, and got off free and clear - Turns out there was a law still on the books that made it legal to beat your wife on Sundays in NC.

One of the New England states has (or had, if they've repealed it) a law that the age of consent for girls was 16 and for boys it was 18, meaning that a 17 year old girl having sex with a 17 year old boy was committing statutory rape.SIG TOO BIG!
