I need information from those that may have firsthand knowledge

...of seizures in new borns. My oldest sister had her first baby Saturday at about 8:30 PM. The baby appeared to be normal and healthy. Sunday morning at about 9:30 AM the baby began to have seizures and was put into the intensive care unit. They have the baby medicated via intravenous tube to prevent seizures. They have given the baby a CAT Scan and it did not show any abnormalities. They have taken some biopsies to test for infections...but it will take a few days for the cultures to grow. One other piece of information...the baby was 7 days overdue and labor had to be induced.

Has anyone of you had experience or knowledge of what the problem may be and what the prognosis may be?

Before you ask...my sister does not smoke...drink...has never used drugs in her life or suffered an STD. Also before you suggest it I have done a search on the internet...but first hand experience/knowledge is what I am seeking.

I personally have never heard of a new born being an epileptic and believe that it shows up at a later age...but I may be wrong.

'Neonatal seizures. These seizures appear in the first few days of a newborn's life and may go away quickly.'

Prognosis is *excellent* and the baby will probably be just fine barring any disorder they haven't picked up yet. This is not all that uncommon. Be worried but not too worried.

Yes...I found the same thing. Hopefully it will be that or something that will quickly go away. I grieve for my sister as she is...at this point...just devasted...virtually hysterical.

Try to get another doctor opinion, at least to be more calm, this is not the place to ask for it. Hope everything goes fine

It's been a long time since I've dealt with post natal care; but,

maybe there's something in this link for you:

                    http://www.brilliantbaby.com/html/seizures.html

Yes. I have seen infants have seizures. Sometimes, there is a cause and sometimes it's a one or two time thing, goes away, never to return.

I'm sure they will run exhausting tests, either there or at a Children's Hospital in your area.

                    I wish your sister well.

My thoughts and prayers go out to your sister and her child.

my hubby and I were epileptic. he was epileptic for age of 2 to age 14. went through numerous tests and different heavy medications during those years. they never figured out why he got them. But he outgrew them. Me, I suddenly had a grand mal seizure when I was 18 after a serious migraine. I, too, underwent many tests and medications. But there seemed to be nothing wrong with my brain or its activity. After my 2nd grand mal seizure, i havent had once since then. its been 5 years. I'm still on medication but my doctor says that i may be able to get "weened" off of them in a few years.

When I was pregnant with my son, we were really worried that he would be epileptic because of the epileptic history in the family. Luckily he was born without any signs.

my hubby's former boss has a daughter who suddenly became epileptic at the age of 2 months. it was a very fearful and trying time for the family. I remember hubby telling me that the boss was greatly stressed and had very little sleep because his daughter would have numerous seizures. The cause was from the fact that there was a huge hole in her brain because that part never developed. She's now 4 years old, healthy and happy. unfortunately in her case, because her brain never developed in that one spot, she has a learning disability and she processes things slower than kids her age.

I do hope that your sister's child wont have to go through that. its hard on any parent who has to see their children in any sort of condition like that.
