I agree...they do suck, but the Luxor is connected to the Mandalay and is easy "stumbling" distance from the convention/parties. ;-)
For $80/night to basically "store my suitcase," it's a good deal. As for spending any time in the room, who does that? I don't sleep there and if I need to take a shower, I jump in the lobby fountain.
Another choice that hasnt been mentioned is the Four Seasons Hotel that is located on the Mandalay Bay property. I don't see any availability on their website but that may be just because its too far out. The closer you get to the date the more they will begin showing what is available in 2005.
