There is no magicly place you go when you die, either is there a place where you are punished forever.
That was someting used to keep primitve societies in check. They didnt have a awesome form of police to catch crinimals. So instead they made everybody thing they had to be good or they will burn in hell. The tradition carries on to even this day

I dont think there is a afterlife at all. People just dont want to grasp the concept that this is all there is.
