Saw an interesting NOVA on PBS about this:

When the body was first discovered by if I remember a hunter they thought it was a murder victim. When the coroner arrived he saw the body and figured it was a settler maybe a couple of hundred years old because he was clearly Caucasoid.
Anyway, they soon discovered he was almost 10,000 years old.
There are a number of archaeologists who believe that there were other people here that were chased out by who we now know as "Native Americans."
