The thing you should understand is that they want to separate NOT because they hate the english, but because they feel they are so different that they would be better off in their own nation. Look, some americans (Especially Conan O'Brien) don't even know where Canada is and now they suddenly are specialists about the social and political issues we have in Quebec.
Conan O'Brien maybe funny, but he attacked a minority in Canada (Quebecers). I'm not so sure people would find him funny in the USA if he made the same kind of jokes about black americans.
And no, we're not like french people from France. It's like saying americans in the United States are like English people just because they speak the same langage.
