If you get new ones that they will still use next semester, you can usually sell them back for a decent price at the end of the semester.

take a look at amazon, you can find the majority of books most US universities and colleges use (not sure about australia). I remember i paid $130 for a damn math book and amazon had it for almost 1/3rd of the price.

Another popular alternative is to buy 'em from some other student that just finished the same course.

Dude, you should start up a good book buying, trading and selling racket near campus. Pay a buck or two more for books than the stores are buying them back at, and then sell them for a couple bucks less then they would resell them at. It's still huge money.

then one day you'll realize a lot of your books you don't even use, because the professor is friends with the guy who wrote it, or gets some sort of kickback for making you buy it

A lot of campus book stores aren't owned by the university, there is usually a private bookstore or two that kills students with textbook prices. The school and the private bookstores aren't the losers here, the students are.

try picking some used copies of the books off amazon, half, ect...that's what I used to do...save some major change
