BLAINE, Wash. - A major border crossing was closed for about an hour Monday after guards found "a small amount" of explosives in a car entering Canada from the United States, Canadian customs officials said.

They did not specify what type of explosives was found at the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine.
"We found a small amount of explosives in a car coming in from the United States and immediately closed and evacuated the port," Canadian customs spokeswoman Paula Shore said.
A Royal Canadian Mounted Police bomb squad was called in to remove the explosives, Shore said.
The crossing was closed in both directions from 1 to 2 p.m., she said. Officials rerouted traffic to the truck crossing on Pacific Highway, less than a mile to the east.
Mike Milne, a Seattle-based spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, confirmed the closure but declined to elaborate.
About 8 million vehicles cross at Blaine, the northern end of Interstate 5, every year.

A bizarre mix-up in directions set off an international incident at the Peace Arch border crossing south of Vancouver Monday afternoon.
RCMP say a woman from Houston, Texas tried to cross into Canada with a grenade in the glovebox of her vehicle.
RCMP spokesman Tim Shields says the border crossing was shut down for about one hour while a police explosives unit removed the grenade.
Traffic was routed a few kilometres east to Pacific Highway, which has a border crossing typically used by commercial trucks.
Shields says the 28-year-old woman was actually trying to get to Vancouver, Washington -- not Vancouver, B.C.
The woman's husband apparently works for the U.S. military and is stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington.
The woman has now been turned over to Immigration Canada.
Shields says she is apparently quite shaken by the incident, and it's likely she didn't know the grenade was in the vehicle.
He says charges are unlikely.
The Peace Arch border crossing is one of the biggest U.S.-Canada border crossings.
About eight million vehicles cross at Blaine, the northern end of Interstate 5, every year.
