He anglicized his name to Ernie Lensman shortly before he joined the service to fight in World War II. After he got out of the service he changed his name once again to Bruno Lensman, under which he won two New York Golden Gloves championships in the middleweight division. An eye injury ended his boxing career and he drifted into a downward spiral of menial odd jobs, marriages and battles with the bottle. The last legal name change came in 1974, when he became Clifford Lensman.
