Just in time for Valentine's Day: Feds Seize Thousands of Illegal Roses in Miami

MIAMI -- U.S. border authorities have seized thousands of roses imported from Colombia and Ecuador that were grown or distributed without royalties or other fees being paid on brands with trademarks, officials said.

Authorities said they had destroyed 79 boxes of illegal flowers during the pre-Valentine's Day surge, each with 125 to 200 stems, or likely more than 10,000 roses since late January.

``And we're still looking,'' Jeffrey Baldwin, port director for U.S. Customs and Border Patrol at Miami International Airport, said Thursday.

I actually think that there was something to that like at some point foreign roses had spread a disease to a lot of the roses in North America. It caused them to develop brown and black spots with more frequency. I think that is what the paranoia from the FEDS was about. Though I still agree with the majority of the people in this thread. WASTE OF MONEY.

These roses are ILLEGAL, being SMUGGLED in. Do you all expect no law enforcement at all until all terrorists are caught?

And do you even half believe that US Customs have stopped all other inspection efforts in order to nab the illegal roses?

And do you really believe that US producers and compliant foreign producers should have to suffer the effects of illegal products in the market, especially when we've already intercepted the illegal products?

Plus, we're talking less than 1000 dozen roses here, not exactly an economically significant amount.

And intercepting illegal goods before they hit our markets does not change the price of the good here, although it does keep the price from going lower (and hurting our domestic suppliers).

I know KRL is just playing with some of you folks (he knows all the knee-jerk page views his sig will get!), but jeez!

I think this is taken a little outta context here. These Customs dudes were stationed at an airport. It was their job was to inspect imports at this particular location. They stumbled across some illegally imported flowers during routine searches, but they could have turned up anything. End of story. The "still searching" aspect just applies to looking through more boxes in the airport customs area. It's not like this was a major sting or investigation, but rather something that just popped up during the normal routine of a few employees doing their job.
