    Copyright Protection

Ok , my sons have finished their demo CD, Its turned out Awesome I am going to send off necessary paperwork to the copyright office today.

It says it take 5-6 months to get the registration back.

So here is my question. In the meantime shall I wait to send off the demo CD's to radio stations etc etc, til I get back confirmation from the Library of Congress ?? or should I go ahead and send it off knowing that it will be copyrighted shortly ?

I want to make sure the music, lyrics etc are protected.

If you're taking all this seriously and hope your son can make a career of it, definitely file a copyright first.. However, be aware that it will NOT be cheap to do so Artists automatically hold copyright on any works they create, however, punitive damages are more difficult to win without a copyright registered. Protect your son's interests

A copyright costs $40US do register it do NOT rely on a common law copyright.

Send the CD and forms FedEX not USPS and keep your FedEx receipt. The copyright date is effective the day of receipt not when the paper gets back to you. The FedEx receipt is valid proof of delivery. Do NOT

Send the CD's to yourself via registered mail in the meantime - keep the package closed.
