Chico woman dies in head-on crash
By GREG WELTER - Staff Writer
A woman from Chico was killed early Saturday morning after a 17-year-old male, allegedly driving while intoxicated, lost control of his pickup on Highway 99 and slammed head-on into her vehicle.
According to a California Highway Patrol report, Andrea Marie Spessard, 24, was killed instantly.
The teenager, whose name was not released because of his age, was driving north on Highway 99 at 3:42 a.m. when, according to witnesses, he drifted into the opposing lane and struck Spessard's 1983 Ford Thunderbird.
The crash occurred south of Rowles Road, just north of the border between Tehama and Butte counties.
Motorists behind the teen-ager told investigators he had been swerving all over the road.
The male, a resident of Sheridan in Placer County, was transported to Enloe Medical Center for treatment of abrasions and a broken right ankle. He was then arrested and booked into Tehama County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence.
The teen wasn't wearing a seat belt. The victim was. The accident remains under investigation.
