Yes , of course , some scientists were (are) atheists , but so very many were not that if find a statement such as "I don't believe in God , I believe in science" to be silly .
Note , I am not saying atheism is silly , I am saying invocing science as a reason is .
Newton for example could hardly have advanced his career by becoming a Fellow of Trinity College if he went and said I don't think God exists.
Belief in God does not stack up with scientific method.
1. observe
2. formulate hypothesis
3. conduct experiemnts to prove/disprove hypothesis.
Belief in God in all likelihood can never been proved or disproved. Which is why belief in God is a faith.Comment

I believe in infinity. Whatever label you want to put on that - God or whatever is just a label. As soon as you label infinity you have limited it and thus it is not infinite any longer. Or in the words of Lao Tzu: "The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao."

In Einsteins day atheism was quite common and in fact Einstein was often attacked for being a believer .
True , but Newton did more than simply give lip service to God . He was , both in public and in private, much more vocal than needed to be "politically correct". Dont forget that he originally intended to be a theologist but switched to science saying it was his intention "to lay out the laws of nature with such clarity and exactness that no thinking man may deny the existince of God".
