i would assume productivity is somewhere average

but would it be profitable in terms of sales?

seen it done with cash4china.com but no idea how there sites do.

traffic is cheap but i think would be tough battle

Communism more or less fell in China on the economic front. It still there on a political and social level, but there is a lot of $$$ in China.

A growing number have Yuan debit cards, although not compatible with Visa/Mastercard it also doesn't have the bullshit either like chargebacks.

We are working on a billing solution that will not require (but will accept) Yuan debit cards so you can bill ALL Chinese Internet surfers.

Expect to see it late 2004 early 2005.

To answer that question, you need to consider a few points here:

Traffic wise, Chinese internet traffic is huge and still one of the fastest growing region in the world.

But look at the GDP per capita there, you really cant expect many ppl to sign up for $20+ per month. Yes, there are lots of really rich ppl in China, but they are all in clusters of those biggest cities.

If you are gonna do it, you need a way to only let in traffic from big cities. (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, etc)

One really hard problem to solve is that the Chinese government has cencership regarding to what sites that mainland ppl can have access to, a lot of places in China cant access CNN for example. And they update this list all the time, so if your TGP got big enough and its marked as not appropiate then they will just block you from mainland traffic.

Believe me, if it is any easier, a lot of ppl including myself would have already done something with it.

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

You more or less have it. However here's a few points

1. Hong Kong is a seperate semi autonomous territory with its own legal system, economy, border, and currency however it is under Chinese administration.

The GDP per capita in Hong Kong is comparable to Europe, Canada, and the U.S. Hong Kong has the freest economy in the world.

Also they have Visa/Mastercard there.

2. As far as mainland cities go.....the GDP per capita is closer to $10k. Most Chinese surfers have money to spend since they can afford Internet access at $20 (dialup) to $40 (DSL) a month.

For most Chinese 300 Yuan a month ($37) is a bit much for a paysite. But they will be willing to pay 300 Yuan for a year for example.

Also almost no one has a Visa/Mastercard. So it is tough to convert Chinese traffic even if the paysite content is localized. You need to accept Yuan debit cards....or even better.....come up with a solution that will accept other forms of payment that are easily accessible to every Chinese surfer. That is what we are coming up with.

3. Having your TGP or paysite blocked is really not much of a risk. China is more interested in blocking political sites, but has shown little interest to block porn sites. Most of the big porn sites are not blocked. Even sex.com isn't blocked.

4. Dialers are not a good solution because China compresses its telephone circuts for international calls. This is great for voice traffic but bad for data meaning that most modem to modem calls won't sync up and if they do it's slower than 9.6 killobits.
