i've always wondered if hosts actually do have 99.99% uptime.
that means they're only down for 4.464 minutes a month.
impressive if it's true for any host.

You need an underground bunker with generator ups and backup machines http://www.thebunker.net/
Dedicated servers are locked into the Web in a former NATO nuclear bunker, hidden in a low-risk countryside area. Thirty metres below ground, the data centre matches high physical and digital security, Night vision CCTV, 24-hour security patrols with trained guard dogs, 3.5 metre high security fencing, multiple redundant national grid electricity feeds, automatic fire suppression and environmental control systems and a 24 x 7 Networks Operation Centre are some the things we can boast about.
Then there are the parts we don't tell ANYONE about.
Now, what you know about and don't know about, add up to the uncompromising

my host has a per month uptime of like 99.5% or some shit and then you have to request the refund and it is prorated on 6 hr blocksComment

Webhosts always cover thier ass in terms that make them pretty much not responsible for anything. They arent responsible for power outages, floods, breakdowns, blah, blah, blah..
If they are anything like the prudes at Comcast, you'll never get a credit out of them. I am constantly having outages with Comcast here for about 12 hours at a time - but they dont credit you unless you are down for more than 24 consecutive hours, yet they advertise the service as "always on".Comment

i have had used numerous hosts, and all have been down for sometime at one point...mainly from DDoS attacks
webair was the worst though, man, that shit was up and down like a roller coaster for 2 month....i just kept giving them a chance and they kept proving me wrong.
nakedhosting has been the best 3 hours of downtime in the last yearComment

I noticed a little confusion about the uptime percentages hope the following will help you out:
Uptime Downtime Per Year Downtime per month
99.9999% 0 days 0:00:31 .53 / 0 days 0:00:02 .59
99.999% 0 days 0:05:15 .36 / 0 days 0:00:25 .92
99.99% 0 days 0:52:33 .60 / 0 days 0:04:19 .20
99.9% 0 days 8:45:35 .99 / 0 days 0:43:11 .99
99% 3 days 15:36:00 / 0 days 7:12:00
98% 7 days 7:12:00 / 0 days 14:24:00
97% 10 days 22:48:00 / 0 days 21:36:00
96% 14 days 14:24:00 / 1 days 4:48:00
95% 18 days 6:00:00 / 1 days 12:00:00
(format: hour:minute:second .millisecond)
You have to read the terms of service carefully with every web host to find out exactly how the uptime guarantee works and what kind of refund / credit you get back. Also if its not included in the details be sure to ask if the uptime guarantee is based by month or by year. It doesn't hurt to get a free uptime monitor (siteuptime.com has free uptime monitors) because chances are if you don't say anything they arent going to give you your money back.SIG TOO BIG! Guarantees usually cover only prorated fees for the period of downtime, and hosts generally don't admit to what most of us would consider downtime. It's pretty common that even if a host's computers are inaccessible due to any number of network problems, they don't consider that down, since the servers themselves are up. I don't care if their some other host screwed up routing tables, or a backhoe operator in Virginia sliced some fiber, if most surfers can't get to my server, I consider that downtime. For most people in this biz, the prorated fee (i.e. one day of downtime means one day's service fee is waived) is trivial compared to the loss of revenue or other business damage (delisted galleries, irate affiliates, etc.). Say you have a dedicated box for $300 a month, so you get $10 off for being down for a day.Comment
-
The 99.99% uptime guarantee refers to the "network" only. If you read the fine print you'll see that....that refers to their upstream provider (level3, verio, whoever)
That doesn't refer to your server or hardware in the datacenter like a router or switch.

Its like when you take your vacation pictures to be developed. If the kid at Wal-Mart ruins them, they give you a new roll of firm and send you on your way. But the new roll of firm is hardly worth the cost of your vacation. You could take the vacation again, but of course you'll never be able to take the exact same roll of pictures again.Originally posted by arg

Well, such is also true with webhosting. The host gives you a day's credit. So what? Who cares? Its a drop in the bucket compared to lost revenue and headaches.
Couple this with the fact that it seems like everybody owns a hosting company these days and good portion are running thier companies out mommy's basement with a couple of APCs and some shitty boxes they call servers . A good portion of the people running hosting companies are complete idiots that have no idea how to lock a box down and had someone else set everything up for them.
Many hosts charge far more than what thier service is worth and most try to screw you at every turn.Comment

Yup... also, 99.99% uptime has no time limits. So basically, between the creation of the universe and the end of the universe, the network will only be down, at most... .01% of the time.Originally posted by Lenny2

This is not true of all hosts. Some hosts us included will cover any unscheduled downtime in their SLA. Additionally it is unfair to expect the host to do more than credit the customer for downtime. The limit of their liability can not and should not exceed the amount of money paid by the customer. Afterall the host is providing web hosting services not insurance for your business.
Let's face it shit happens all of this relies on mechanical equipment. When/if it fails unexpectedly and/or without warning all that can be done are to fix it ASAP and prepare for the inevitable failures by stocking spare parts.

Some of you guys are being too technical about this...heres the facts: hosting downtime over an amount I deam to be acceptable pisses me off and if a web company doesnt wanna compensate me for my losses during the time then I will go somewhere that will. This cost them business whenever anyone asks "how's host so and so" The terms can say anything they want if I feel I'm not getting what I paid for then they will lose my business...they arnt getting off the hook through some terms loophole with me.
Anyway I was compensated and the situation is resolvedComment
