I pay $240 for two servers and a couple hundred gig of transfer a month. To talk about server cost, ya have to start asking about bandwidth and all. Having been to the Choker sites, he must be using some. Everything is quick...

The "true" cost of the servers the TGP's are on is $60 each a month. They are very small boxes capped at 3mbps each. No support. Even if a server goes down it is not rebooted until I call in and request it. So there is practically ZERO support. And it could take days just to get a hardware issue resolved. Actually one of them has been down since friday. But when you have many of them, do your own DNS and expire domains in 15 minutes and have backup servers standing by with backed up databases, then if a server goes down you just change the zone file and boom you are back up. This is not a solution for the average webmaster. But for me it works fine. This is why i get such a good deal on certain servers.Originally posted by slapass

look, I don't know but the average "choker style" TGP may have like 5kb (actually I made one page TGP 1.8Kb big) .. and do the math:
500.000 hits x 5kb = 2.500.000kb =2.5GB x 30 days = 75GB a month .. how much do you get charged for this ?

Very easy to get 5 servers for around $300. All he has to do is go to http://www.servermatrix.com/ and get the Super Celeron for $69/Month.
Don't tell me a Celeron is not good enough. I use to run movie gallerys of a freaking cobalt 3i 4 years ago. It only had a 300 Mhz amd with 512 ram on linux. It got about 150K page hits a day and even served 200k movie clips.
Don't call bullshit cause I was the one e-mailed http://trix.sexswap.com/ complaining that my cobalt box wasn't doing the 1 million hits a day that I expected Anyway, it did pretty damn good for the hardware specs. Plus there was a shitload of movie hotlinkers that added more server load. Took a while to find this link but it does bring back memories

Ram Choy: The OS is linux and it only uses a 300Mhz AMD cpu. I tryed to tweak the httpd.conf file but it made it worst so I made it back to its original. Call me crazy but I am using it to host my gallerys for TGP sites and all the servers resources are at 90% use (About 150,000 Hits a Day). I am not using any CGI scripts or JAVA. I am sure I can get a much more powerful server for the same price. I bet the the server management software is what cost so much but you can get the almost the same thing from

I almost fell off my chair. First, sure I will agree with Ram on that you can build a better system on your own for cheaper...but to do that you have to value your labor at $0 an hour. Also, I think we are splitting hairs when you can save less than $1k. The RAQs are still thousands less than any of the big servers.
BUT, did you read what I read? 150 fucking thousand hits a day!!! I used to melt NT boxes at 40,000 front page uniques a day and you can give a UNIX box fits at 60,000-80,000. 150,000 fucking hits a day on s cheapo $2000 box...WOW! WOW! WOW! To me, this is an incredible selling point for these thin servers. Maybe I am way off base, but to me, that is a pile of traffic and I am shocked that the server was able to handle it. My hat's off to Cobalt. I would be interested on anyone else's idea of where you can melt a server in terms of hits and OS."
