The sound is horrible but the dogs die almost instantly. What happens is that when the gas is turned on, they fall over unconcious in less than a minute, usually within about 15 to 30 seconds. At that point, their vocal cords contract and air is forced from their lungs causing that ghastly sound.Originally posted by KRL

Actually PETA fakes a lot of it's videos.
And a lot of the info surrounding the videos.
And for the guy that says he's seen this happen in real life, umm, BULLSHIT.
First fact. Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer for a reason. It's victims grow drowsy, and fall asleep. They don't howl, scream or writhe in pain like those dogs in the box. This is why it's the suicide of choice in america (why do you think people are found in garages with their cars running but no one in their house heard anything other then a car start?)
Second fact. Carbon monoxide does NOT displace air. So that crap about them drawing a big breath and screeching is bullshit as well. Freon might do that, it's a heavy gas, but likely not in one breath. And if it was a heavy enough gas like freon to force oxygen out, it wouldn't vibrate the vocal cords like that. (think opposite of helium)
Third fact. Vocal cords don't contract. They vibrate as air moves over them, even in death, they are stationary. What you're attempting to explain is "death rails" or the last gasp..and that's what it is, a gasp. Usually caused because nature doesn't like a vacumm, and air rushes in to fill the lungs. Any air "leaking" from a body at this point doesn't have force of muscle behind it and wouldn't make much noise at all.Comment
