They already do list sponsors (do a search for milfhunter). I think what you're asking is would Google take kickbacks or incentives to rank a sponsor higher in their rankings. If that's what you're asking, I strongly believe they'll do no such thing. There was an engine that did this and it really started the downfall of their engine. I can't remember if it was OpenText or Infoseek that did this but one of the two did it during their upwards climb in the SE world.

If Google really really wanted to do this, and I was in Google's shoes, I'd buy out an SEO company as discretely as possible and have that SEO firm do all the work to getting top placements and simply pay Google at year end the profits. It's easier to shelter it this way.

But as for Google directly, I don't see them altering their actual listings for profit any time soon.
