Simple math: burn more calories then you consume. Keep in mind you burn calories sitting on your ass, sleeping etc. (The amount depends on your metabolism, weight etc) but just about everything good to eat is loaded with calories. Bottom line you will have to exercise and watch what you eat closely.
The Quickest way.. I would have to say no carb if you can handle it. You will drop an easy 5-10 pounds of weight (mostly water) the first week and continue to lose steadily from there. The problem is the rebound when you go off the diet.
