Family Blame Internet For Teacher's Death
The family of a musician strangled to fulfil the "bizarre" sexual fantasy of her killer, believe she would still be alive if it wasn't for the internet.Graham Coutts, 35, was jailed for a minimum of 30 years for strangling special needs teacher Jane Longhurst with a pair of tights.
During the trial, the court heard how Coutts had a seven-year addiction to internet pornography, and that he had surfed the web for images of dead and strangled women on the day before he murdered Miss Longhurst.
Speaking after the verdict, Miss Longhurst's family called for tighter regulation on the kind of pornographic internet sites used by Coutts.
Her mother said she "owed it to Jane" to pressure providers to close down the sites.
"It is monstrous, if they were going to publish books with that sort of material they would be prosecuted," she said. "It's absolutely vile.
Coutts had denied murder at Lewes Crown Court but the jury reached a unanimous guilty verdict after deliberating for nine hours and 10 minutes.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve Dennis, who led the police inquiry, said "a very dangerous man" had been put away.
Coutts, of Hove, East Sussex, had claimed 31-year-old Miss Longhurst consented to kinky sex at his flat on March 14 last year.
The talented viola player and popular teacher was strangled with a pair of nylon tights, which were later found hahahahahaded in her neck.
As he killed her, he "had his way with her", satisfying a "bizarre and macabre" lifelong desire to rape, strangle and kill a woman, the court heard.
Coutts, who confessed to having a fetish for women's necks, then placed the body in the foetal position in a cardboard box, which he kept in the garden shed for 11 days.
Worried his girlfriend might find his "trophy", Coutts used a false name to hire a five foot-wide storage unit in Brighton, where he kept Miss Longhurst's body, visiting it 10 times.
Her naked body was finally found set alight on Wiggonholt Common near Pulborough, West Sussex, on April 19 last year.
