While Hurricane Ivan lashed Jamaica on Saturday, prospects for South Florida have brightened considerably as the powerful system now is forecast to remain about 150 miles west of the Gulf Coast -- far enough away that this region might escape seeing even tropical storm conditions, forecasters said.
