Alan, here's some serious advice. Most of the time when you see something that looks completely crazy to you, stop yourself from posting and think about it first. Especially when it comes to domain names for example, and anything else you aren't experienced in yet. There are some really smart people who know what they're doing when it comes to domains and monetizing traffic. IPK is one of those and there is a reason some of the domains are worth a price near what he is asking for it. Naturally, if you don't know what to do with the name, it's not a smart purchase for you. For a handful of people who know exactly how to use them, it's a good deal.

Some of IPK's names have a south asian slant to them, and while many of the names sound downright preposterous to the US ear, "urdusex.com" and many of his other weird-sounding names get decent traffic. IPK knows his biz, as does the guy who just bought a bunch of the names.

That's very interesting. For example, .info is quite lame tld to most American webmasters, but some smart domain resellers have sold more .info than .com. .info has meanings in alot of different languages, especially spanish.

I had read that hyphens make for better SE ranks, and it's worked for me, so I try to buy hyphened ones in addition if I can.

well, I gotta admit I'm not in the domain trading biz, but I'm not stupid either. All our domains, well over 200, have some use, wether for our paysites, or for SE reasons. Now, do a search for urdu sex at Overture-Search. See those 600 searchs a month? That means that in the best possible scenario -that would be urdusex.com ranking #1 and getting 100% of the visitors- that's only 600 SE clicks. We've domains which nobody would type in in a million years, but THE WORSE of them gets 1000+ SE clicks FOR FREE. So I'd say we know a little about domains. If you like it, maybe not me, buy my SE guy. What does it means? Even a GOOD domain (which, seeing the numbers, urdusex is NOT. Not because I say it so, but because of the cruelty of reality and maths) worth zilch if it has no traffic.

And btw, unless you're KRL and making biz for millions, the only fact of having to sell them for a couple hundreds (or thousands if you want) is an alarm sign for me. The max I paid for a domain was 1600, a really hot domain with a PAID Yahoo listing. It made just a little above 3k in January without any promotion or effort. Do you think urdusex and its 600 searchs will make me 1k?

It's got type-in traffic, regardless of SE placement, quite a bit more than 600 a month. And I expect Overture underrepresents this particular name because Overture and its supplying engines are English-based, not Urdu-based. You sound like you know SEs well, type-in domains not so well. They're quite different areas of expertise, but both make good money if you specialize in them.
