I did it for awhile. Ya sure loose weight fast. Gained it back fast when I couldn't stand it anymore. Plus it really isn't that good for ya.
Have you read about the South Beach Diet? Loose weight and its better for you. It's a heart healthy diet. Something webmasters need to think about. Plus it is easier to stick to.
Most active Atkins BB out there. Tons of support, recipes etc.
South Beach Diet? Bah, it's just a slightly modified Atkins maintenance program. Remember, Atkins isn't really about next to zero carbs (just the first week), you slowly work in the good (complex) carbs and learn to keep the simple ones (white foods) outta your life as much as possible - that's 95% of the Atkins diet (sadly, most people wrongly associate it with just meat, cheese and eggs).
i don't know much about atkins yet, but seeing as to how it is being marketed mainstream now it caters to the general public AKA lazy people... i mean yeah, the fundamental rule to losing weight is to keep low on carbs... but you really have to have a well balanced diet, and also workout consistasntly to do it healthy.. i'll have to read up more on it.

Of course if you go back to eating the way before you lost weight you will gain it back. Its what got you fat in the first place.
If I hit myself in the head with a hammer it hurts, so I stop and it feels really good when I stop. But starts hurting again when I start hitting myself with the hammer again.
I did Askins on it's first incarnation many years ago. Lost 40 pounds. Gained it all back within a year. It is a dangerous diet if you have any kidney problems since it loads the kidneys with extra burden.
It works really well, however you have to say goodbye to a lot of foods you probably love to eat which is very hard for most people.
I've seen people drop from 10 to 30 pounds on it.
Once you stop it will all come back and then some.
I think the best approach is to just eat what you like, but moderate down the portions when you are dieting. Cut out as much of the fattening foods as possible, but not so much that you get the cravings which put you in the yo you cycle. Then just increase your metabolism daily through vigorous exercise.
Also, there is a lot of debate on the long term health effects. Your body needs carbs to function properly.
The Atkins diet is by far one of, if not the most popular fad diets ever invented. With more than six million copies sold, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution is still making history with a controversial way of dieting.
The Atkins Diet involves eating foods which are high in protein, while limiting foods which are high in carbohydrates; or foods which generally tend to raise blood sugar levels. The diet works on the principle of ketosis; a process by which excess bodyfat is burned as fuel, resulting in a rapid weight reduction.
Sounds like a great way to lose weight, but is the Atkins Diet too good to be true?
As previously stated, the Atkins Diet encourages a drastic reduction of carbohydrates, while maintaining moderate intake of high protein foods such as eggs, cheese, hamburger (without the bun), steak, and fats to name a few. This is what was previously known as the high protein, low carbohydrate diet. Similar diet, new name...
The Atkins Diet definitely works and is extremely effective for temporary weight loss. Here's why: We know that about 60% of our daily caloric intake comes from carbohydrates. So if we were to eliminate or drastically reduce our primarily consumed nutrient, there would be a significant weight loss, especially in the first couple of weeks of using the program. But there are several health related problems that can occur while on, or as a result of using the Atkins principles.
If someone were to be consistent with the Atkins Diet, they may run into the following problems: acetone breath, gout (painful inflammation of the joints), high cholesterol (LDL = bad), kidney damage, weakness, bad (acne) or dry skin, thinning hair, increased risk of heart attack, yellowish instead of white eye balls, set back or sunken eye balls, catabolism (muscle loss), frequent urination, vitamin and mineral loss, mood swings, headaches, dizzy spells, and other health related problems due to improper nutrition balance.
Nutritionally, the Atkins Diet is terrible. It's an unhealthy way to lose weight. It's not uncommon for someone to lose 10 - 15 pounds within 24 hours while on the Atkins Diet. But in fact, what you're losing is muscle glycogen (stored energy within the muscles) and body water. The minute you go back to eating regular meals that contain carbohydrates, you'll gain double the weight you were before you started the program.
How would the human body react to a workout while on the Atkins Diet?
For intense or endurance training, the Atkins Diet is not ideal. Because 1) you're depleting your body's primary source of energy used during a workout, and 2) everything else will literally shut down over the long haul as a direct result of depleted carb levels. Your energy and strength levels while training will suffer.
Why do some doctors approve of the Atkins Diet?
There are differences of opinion when it comes to the effectiveness of the Atkins Diet. But you have to pay attention to the context in which the opinion was given. For example, "Does the Atkins Diet work?" is different from, "Is the Atkins Diet safe?" Many doctors would say, "Yes, it works." But at the same time many would say, "No, it isn't safe."
How would the Atkins Diet hold up long-term?
It is unrealistic to assume that anyone could stay on the Atkins Diet for any significant amount of time, given the drawbacks of the popular diet. It wouldn't take long for someone to realize that they literally couldn't live long without the consumption of carbohydrates.
my sister and my mom both use it and lost close to 100lbs each. but now they can't stop using it because the weight comes right back...it's a complete lifestyle change.
My gf goes on it every now and again. Her mom does too and i have to a small degree.
You loose the weight really fast but the diet itself isn't really healthy IMO. But you don't stay on it for long.

Cause they obviously ate like shit and did not excersise before the diet.

It's that they have found how they should have been eating in the first place to not get fat.

That's part of the point. It would be stupid to stay on the Atkins diet for an extended period in my opinion, I don't think it's healthy.
A diet plan that people can stick to is actually part of the plan of the diet. Most are to weak willed to keep it going. Yep, I was stupid to totally fall off the wagon and head over to Burger King for a Whopper and then cram BabyRuths in my mouth. Add sitting in front of the monitor for hours on end.
So now I'm trying to be a little smarter by adding exercise and eating a balanced diet. Think if ya just avoid junk food and exercise a bit, all will right itself. In America here - guess that means I should of just gone for the surgery.
Naw. I drop by every once and a while to read some stuff, get food ideas, but just have been a lurker so far. You?
I plan on going back to being a reg again as soon as my doc says I can go back to doing Atkins.

I have a ton of good recipes for snacks and stuff for Atkins. It's a great way to live once you learn how. You can eat really well once you find all the great products and recipes.
a friend went on it she lost weight then gained it back as soon as she started to eat carbs again
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.
I tried Atkins. Like most, it worked for awhile but then I levelled off above my target weight, got fed up and started back on the 'bad' carbs.
The most effective diet I have ever been on was called DEPRESSION.
I got in a really bad funk just after my 18th birthday. I stopped eating like I had been eating for 5 years - reduced my daily intake by almost half I think - while still going to my dance and yoga classes 3 times a week. Within 30 days I had dropped the 20lbs I had struggled with my entire teenage life and kept it off even after the depression lifted about 3 months later. In fact I didn't start gaining again until I got back into a serious relationship with a guy who turned out to be a total asswipe.
So take it from me Juicy, get yourself mega depressed and join a gym. You'll drop those extra pounds in no time.

Time and time again, the Atkins detractors show they don't really understand the diet. It's not about completely eliminating carbs, nor is it about gorging on meat, cheese and eggs. Never has been.
The most important thing to take away from Atkins was how moronic the low-fat craze was. This type of thinking lead to the 800 calorie "fat -free" brownie that was ladened with tons of white flour and sugar. "But I'm eating fat-free, why am I getting so fat?" Duh. Unneeded simple sugars are instantly converted into fat, raising both blood sugar (which later triggers rebound hunger) and cholesterol (which is used in processing carbs into fat). Did you know that 80% of all your body's cholesterol is produced by the liver? Studies show that low-carbers consistently lower their bad cholesterol, blood sugar evels, weight, and BP.
I lost 30 pounds in 99 on Atkins. Sure, I've fluctuated +/-10 pounds since then, but I can easily control my weight now that I understand the mechanisms. I can maintain my weight mostly by simply avoiding simple sugars. Other than that, I eat pretty much whatever I want - including fair usage of whole wheat bread, ww tortillas, ww cereals, oatmeal, beans, brown rice, fruit, french fries, Miller Lite, hard alcohol, etc. I also jog around 3X a week (that always helps).

Actually, a study was published in one of the major medical journals that showed that's not really true. When eating a low carb diet the body produces ketones. These can also feed the brain and studies have shown that the heart and brain actually function 25% better when fed a ketonogenic diet than when fed with glucose.
"Ketones are fat molecules produced by the liver; they are the intermediate product of fat metabolism. Ketones are an alternative source of energy to glucose. Rather than being poison, which is how the press often refers to ketones, they make the body run more efficiently and provide a backup fuel source for the brain. Richard Veech, an N.I.H. researcher who studied medicine at Harvard and then got his doctorate at Oxford University with the Nobel Laureate Hans Krebs, calls ketones ?magic? and has shown that both the heart and brain run 25 percent more efficiently on ketones than on blood sugar."
Fuck those kinds of diets. I eat what I wanna eat, when I wanna eat it. The key to losing weight it drinking LOTS of water. They say that you should take half of your weight and drink that amount of ounces in water. If you do that, do some light exercize, and try to trim down on what you normally eat like thinking before you eat that 4th piece of pizza or instead of grabbing a second pop, grab a water, you'll be doing good.
Cause they obviously ate like shit and did not excersise before the diet.

wow, you're a true asshole huh? When did you get your doctorate, cause apparently you're the Atkins expert? Why don't you shut the fuck up about shit you don't know anything about

KRL..I have always respected you and your posts on this message board. They have always seemed VERY THOUGHT out and intelligent. You tend to stay with the message, and not go for cheap slams.
So, it kinda pains me to take issue with many of the things you posted.
First of all though..I have a ? Did you write that entire post as your opinion..or were you quoting someone? If it was someone, who were you quoting?
Now, some of the issues:
Right off the top, I have to take issue with this statement:"The Atkins diet is by far one of, if not the most popular fad diets ever invented."
Atkins is a LIFESTYLE in a practical sense..NOT a "fad" diet. This is not a fad..it's been around for decades. It's not something whimsical thought up to make some quick money by selling some special candy bars and books.
Next:"Nutritionally, the Atkins Diet is terrible. It's an unhealthy way to lose weight. It's not uncommon for someone to lose 10 - 15 pounds within 24 hours while on the Atkins Diet."
Again..so totally incorrect. I don't know where this person gets his information (or if YOU posted the message where you got this information), but that is COMPLETELY and TOTALLY FALSE! I've not heard of ONE person losing 15 pounds in 24 hours!!! That's almost physiologically impossible! And the diet is not unhealthy. What is wrong with getting rid of REFINED SUGAR and STARCHY foods? That's what the Atkins plan is mostly about. Is REFINED SUGAR and STARCHY food good for you? That's what you will argue? It is amazing how many people will say "on this diet all you eat is meat and you don't get any carbs." PATENTLY UNTRUE!
I know you didn't say that..but so many do.
And I'll just end with this (though there are many other points I disagree with): "It wouldn't take long for someone to realize that they literally couldn't live long without the consumption of carbohydrates."
WHO said there were NO carbs in Atkins? Another falsehood that is perpetuated. You DO lower your carb intake. You try to stay at 50-60 grams for the typical person once they've lost weight to stay at the weight they want. And 60 grams of carbs a day is MORE than plenty for health! Some people even go as high as 100 Grams of carbs a day and stay healthy.
This is not a diet of ALL MEAT & NO CARBS! Not even close.
Whats not healthy about eating meats, cheeses, veggies, fruit etc...
?

Exactly!!
And I always find it interesting that MOST people say "My friend, mother" or someone OTHER than them did this diet. So they do not speak from first hand.

Anyone who thinks you can just hop on ANY fad diet and be healthy while losing weight is out of their mind. Exercise is the key to all, but most peoples exercise routine consists of watching Aerobics videos or Sweatin To The Oldies.
