took my fresh pc 5 mins to catch a virus/trojan

so today i had my occassional format day to get everything running smooth again... and after a whopping 5 minutes connected to the internet my firewall/virus scanner reports the first infection, fucking great!

Wonder if I'll see the day that M$ secures windows completely lol... thank God for Macs

You need to learn to use your firewall correctly.

When I installed XP for the first time a few months ago it didn't occur to me that the CD wouldn't be up to date... a few minutes after I plugged in the ethernet I saw the dreaded "your computer will reboot in 90 seconds" dialog.

I wiped the lot, put in a temporary restrictive firewall on my gateway (only outbound HTTP connections allowed), reinstalled and patched everything from windowsupdate.com

I don't know what people without firewalls are supposed to do. They can't easily download the patch if they're not net connected, but as soon as they connect they get infected!

Considering XP comes with a firewall built in this shouldnt be a problem

I do use it correctly, the virus/trojan was blocked but my program gives me an alert when something like that happens.

I think anyone in this biz should have a stand alone router, that acts as their firewall. Lock it up very tight.

                        Don'y worry, be safe!

From what I can work out the firewall is included in the original XP release, but it's not enabled by default until you install SP2.

                            Same chicken and egg problem.
