Usually it is because they are lacking something in their diet.
I think our dogs eat better than I do, and they poop less than most dog and I have never seen them eat it... -
Some dogs just get a kick out of eating shit. I took my dogs to a trainer and she said sometimes they get bored and they enjoy playing with their shit. Disgusting if you ask me.Comment

My dogs do during winter on occasion. It's usually the female beagle though the male does on occasion too.

It can be a bad habit my one Rott used to do this when he was a pup but luckily he stopped and my other doesn't bother.
