I am here in Central Florida. Currently we have 50+ mph sustained winds with gusts approaching 100mph. Power has been off and on for the last 12 hours. Cable just came back so that I am able to get online. According to the news we will have more of this current weather until about 2pm EST. The sound of the wind is very impressive.
So far from what I can see there are some trees down and the fences that did not go down 3 weeks ago with hurricane Charlie are going down now. We have had high winds for more than 24 hours. Where I am at we have not had much of the 20+ inches of rain that have been talking about.
I will try to stay connected and update with more info as I can.
Anyone anywhere in florida take care and be safe.Comment

It has been over 40 years since a hurricane has come though central Florida of the size and strength of either Charlie or Frances. We have thought we were safe here in the Central Florida area and are now realizing what the other parts of the stte go through with these types of storms. It is really nasty out there right now.Comment

Well, I hope all of y'all are safe, but unfortunately, there is more. Here is the 5 day forecast for Ivan. They say he will be a cat 5 by Friday. This past Friday, he was 40mph, yesterday he went to 60mph, and today, he is 85mph with gusts of 105mph.

Double your estimate. There are currently 4 million people in florida without power.
Frances is taking its toll. I'm watching Ivan like a hawk.Comment

Yahoo says 4 million without power. We're east of Tampa, and seeing sustained 50+ mph winds now, but still have power (and internet).Comment

Vitasoy:
Sadly that will be inevitable. But considering the numbers of folks there, so far, it "appears" not to be a big issue.damn, I hope theres no more fatalities...
I does "appear" - least at the moment - the state services have made the situation clear and folks have listened.
Tho.. this is only a cat 2 hurricane - not exactly an "earth flattner" - but it is travelling slowly and gonna just cause more damage by "hovering".
Tho Frances is damned serious (anything can change yet!) - I find it ironical listening to all the news media coverage and fuss over this. It was only a few years back when 12,000 people were killed just across the Gulf in Guatamala by a hurricane and the only mention that got initially was a small column on the back page of the US press - if that. That is still rarely mentioned as being a "bad hurricane" in the US. The people of Guatamala were obviously in the classification of "non people".
More recently there was another storm which hit the coast of Venezuala while I was in that region. Bodies were being pulled out of the sea where they had been washed down from inland. That also had little mention.
Fingers crossed - but Florida, so far, is very lucky! This was a big storm if nothing else.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

Think I'd rather be alive and see others still walking than bothering about some power or cable technicality!Last hurricane here it took 2 weeks to get power back and over a month for cable.
