                                                      IIRC, there was a video tape showing the 'victim' agreeing to the slaughter and being eaten. so getting him now for man slaughter is a bit out of order. i could understand euthanasia as a reason, as it's most likely illegal in Germany.

                                                      food for thought: using violence against others (hitting, ties, clamps, hot wax ... you know where this is heading) is illegal in most places. with the verdict on this cannibal, couldn't they go and slap all the BDSM folks? it too involves two or more consenting people usually....

                                                      in that light, the 8 1/2 years seem a bit threatening.

                                                                                          The consent argument is bullshit. Cannibalism is and always has been a bigger taboo even than incest for a good reason.

                                                                                          There sure will be cases now where the murderer claims "Uhh, he WANTED to be eaten".

                                                                                          It's really fucked for courts to open this can of worms. It establishes cannibalism as not that much of a crime

                                                                                              I have no problem at all with him being charged and he killed someone so he should go down forever. However, please trust me, I have interviewed more than one person whose greatest fantasy is to be slaughtered and eaten. For most it is just a fantasy but as with any fetish/paraphillia there is always a small portion who don't see the boundries of fantasy.

                                                                                                      I don't doubt that there are people who wish to die that way. Almost every teenager wishes to die at some point due to love problems or whatever. It's still good that dying cannot be achieved so easily, and that others aren't allowed to assist, with very few expeptions in some countries (doctors may end someone's serious physical pain, escpecially if the person is old).



                                                                                                      My problem with this is, it kind of moves cannibalism into the wrong direction, into something that very well may be alright or at least not a heavy crime given the right circumstances.

                                                                                                      I guess the reason some things are really taboo since decades is, that the overall negative impacts are so friggin huge, that special consideration in certain cases cannot be given.

                                                                                                          I guess if you buy into that the victim was at a mental place where he was willing to be killed and that the killer was at a place where he thought it was okay to kill someone that said he wanted to be killed (as opposed to a hannibal character) then it comes down to wondering what you do if one mentally disturbed person kills another mentally disturbed person.

                                                                                                                  What's the sentence that's usually carried with manslaughter in England, after all he wasn't guilty of first degree murder hence the difference in sentencing. Also with the way things happened, the consent of the victim and so forth and just the entire craziness of the case its not so surprising that they didnt get murder but rather manslaughter, which if I'm not wrong is something like 5-25 years here in the states.

                                                                                                                  Shouldn't be arguing why he is getting so little time but why the prosecution wasn't able to convict him of a more serious crime.
